A Question We Hear at Nearly Every Visit
It’s a question we hear often from parents at dental exams: does my child really need an X-ray again this visit? Between concerns about radiation exposure and a general sense that X-rays should be an occasional thing, it’s a fair question. The real answer depends on your child’s age, risk factors, and dental history, not a fixed schedule that applies to every kid the same way. If you have questions about your own child’s schedule, call our Aventura pediatric dentists at (305) 935-1613 or our Pembroke Pines pediatric dentists at (954) 430-2300, and we can walk you through the reasoning at your next appointment.
What Dental X-Rays Actually Show

General Guidelines by Age and Risk
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that most children with a low risk of cavities have bitewing X-rays, which capture the back teeth, about once every 12 to 24 months. Children considered higher risk for cavities, whether due to a history of frequent decay, poor enamel, orthodontic needs, or limited access to regular dental visits, may need X-rays as often as every six months so problems can be caught while they’re still small and easy to treat.
First Dental X-Ray
A child’s very first dental X-ray typically isn’t taken until their back teeth start touching each other, which is usually somewhere between ages two and six, since there’s little need for X-rays before teeth are close enough together for decay to hide between them.
Dental X-Rays for Teens
Older children and teens, particularly those in orthodontic treatment or those whose wisdom teeth are starting to develop, may need a panoramic X-ray periodically to track jaw development and monitor how permanent teeth are positioned.
Why the Schedule Isn’t the Same for Every Child
Two children the same age can have very different X-ray needs. A child with naturally well-spaced teeth, strong enamel, and no history of cavities may go longer between X-rays than a sibling with closely spaced teeth or a family history of decay. We also take into account whether a child has had any dental work done recently, since a filling or crown placed within the last year is usually still being monitored more closely.
Are Dental X-Rays Safe for Kids?

What We Look for at Your Child’s Appointment
At every visit, our dentists weigh your child’s cavity history, current tooth spacing, and any ongoing orthodontic monitoring before deciding whether an X-ray is needed that day. If your child has gone a while without one and we recommend taking a new set, it’s because something in that specific exam points to needing a closer look, not because it’s simply “time” on a generic calendar. We’re always glad to explain exactly what we’re checking for and why.
Have Questions About Your Child’s X-Ray Schedule?
Every child’s mouth develops a little differently, which is why we tailor X-ray recommendations to what’s actually happening rather than a one-size-fits-all timeline. Dental Care Group Kids serves families throughout Aventura, Pembroke Pines, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, and Sunny Isles Beach.
