Teething Remedies: What Actually Works (and What to Skip)

How to Handle the First Dental Problem Every Parent Faces

Your baby is fussier than usual. They are drooling constantly, gnawing on everything in reach, and waking up at night when they had finally started sleeping through. Teething has arrived, and the internet is full of remedies. Some are genuinely helpful. Some are ineffective. A few are actually dangerous. Knowing the difference matters.

At Dental Care Group Kids, we work with families in Aventura, Pembroke Pines, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, and Sunny Isles Beach to support their children’s oral health from the very first tooth. Teething is one of the most common topics we hear about from new parents, and we want to give you straightforward guidance based on what the evidence and professional recommendations actually support.

If your baby is struggling with tooth eruption issues, call our Aventura dental clinic at (305) 935-1613 or our Pembroke Pines dental clinic at (954) 430-2300.

What Teething Actually Feels Like for Your Baby

Teething happens when a tooth pushes through the gum tissue toward the surface. The pressure and inflammation this causes in the gum can be uncomfortable, particularly for the larger molars that arrive between 13 and 19 months.

Common teething symptoms include increased drooling, a desire to chew, gum swelling, tenderness in the area of the erupting tooth, and disrupted sleep. Some babies are more bothered than others. Teething does not cause fever, diarrhea, or significant illness. If your baby has a temperature above 100.4°F or is showing signs of illness, that warrants a call to your pediatrician, not just a teething remedy.

Remedies That Actually Help

Cold Pressure

This is the most consistently effective and safe approach. A chilled (not frozen) teething ring gives your baby something firm and cool to press against sore gums. The cold reduces inflammation, and the pressure counters the sensation of the tooth pushing through. Silicone teething rings that can be refrigerated are widely available and work well.

A Clean, Chilled Cloth

Dampen a clean washcloth, twist it into a shape your baby can grip, and refrigerate it for 15 to 30 minutes. The texture and cold combine to give soothing relief without any product risk.

Gum Massage

Gentle counter-pressure applied directly to the gum where the tooth is emerging can ease discomfort temporarily. Use a clean finger or a soft silicone finger brush.

Age-Appropriate Pain Relief Medication

For babies over two months, infant acetaminophen can be used according to package dosing instructions and your pediatrician’s guidance. Ibuprofen is appropriate for babies six months and older. If your child is particularly distressed, these are safe and effective options when used correctly.

What to Skip Entirely

Benzocaine-Based Numbing Gels

The FDA has advised against using over-the-counter benzocaine products (such as Orajel or Anbesol for infants) for children under two years old. Benzocaine can cause methemoglobinemia, a rare but serious condition that reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. There are safer options available, so this risk is simply unnecessary.

Amber Teething Necklaces

These have been popular on social media for years, but pediatric dental and medical organizations uniformly advise against them. The proposed mechanism, that the amber releases a pain-relieving resin when warmed by body heat, is not supported by scientific evidence. More importantly, teething necklaces present a real choking and strangulation hazard for infants. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against them.

Frozen Teethers or Ice Directly on the Gums

Extreme cold can damage sensitive gum tissue. Chilled is appropriate. Frozen is not.

Homeopathic Teething Tablets

The FDA issued a warning against certain homeopathic teething tablets after finding inconsistent levels of belladonna in some formulations. Belladonna is toxic in sufficient quantities, and because the dosing in homeopathic products is not regulated with the same rigor as conventional medications, the risk is unpredictable.

Clove Oil or Other Herbal Numbing Agents

These are sometimes promoted as natural alternatives to benzocaine. In concentrated forms, they can irritate or burn delicate infant gum tissue and are not recommended by pediatric dental professionals.

When to Call Our Pediatric Dental Office

little baby brushing teethTeething itself is a normal developmental process and generally does not require a dental visit on its own. However, there are situations where a call makes sense:

  • A tooth appears to be erupting significantly out of its expected position
  • You notice the gum tissue over an erupting tooth looks unusually swollen or discolored
  • Your baby has not had a first dental visit yet
  • You have questions about what you are seeing and want a professional opinion

We are always happy to talk through what is happening with your baby’s mouth and let you know if something warrants a visit.

Your Baby’s First Dental Visit: Sooner Than You Think

Many parents do not realize that the recommendation for a child’s first dental appointment is by the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth erupting, whichever comes first. That first visit is brief, gentle, and largely educational. We check the erupting teeth, assess gum health, discuss diet and bottle habits, and give you a clear picture of what to expect over the next few years of dental development.

Starting early also means your child builds a relationship with our team before any treatment is ever needed. That familiarity makes a meaningful difference in how children experience dental care as they grow.
